J.R. Crowe was one of the largest mining operators of the southwest field and extensively engaged in business and residential real estate in Kansas City. He began his coal mining operations in Cherokee County, Kansas and was mainly interested in coal and oil lands in southwest Kansas and Oklahoma. He gained note as being the originator of the strip mining process. He resided in Kansas City for the last twenty years of his life. His wife Martha; a son, J.R. Crowe and a daughter, Mrs. Marshall Neal of Kansas City survived him.
