Obituary
Woodrow W. Bennett, 88, of Kansas City passed away on September 4, 2002. Memorial services and Rose Ceremony will be held on September 9 at Country Club Christian Church on Ward Parkway, Kansas City. A private burial was planned at Mt Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City.
Mr. Bennett was born July 19, 1914 in Turney, Missouri. After attending construction and engineering school in St Joseph, Missouri he was soon helping build military and field installations during WWII. In 1945 he established Bennett Construction Company and Bennett Land Company. Among his more prominent projects were the Kansas City Public Library and the Kansas City Board of Education Building. The library of the University of Kansas City and the Shawnee Mission East High School, the Executive Office Building for Yellow Freight of Overland Park, Kansas. Mr. Bennett was a past president of the Builders Association of Kansas City and past president of the Associated General Contractors of America, Kansas City Chapter.
Mr. Bennett became a mason at Grandview Lodge in 1945 and at Ararat Shrine in 1946. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and York Rite and the Red Cross of Constantine. He was coronated a 33rd degree mason in the Scottish Rite in 1973. He was elected potentate of Ararat Shrine in 1960. He was a past director of the Royal Order of Jesters and became Imperial Potentate in 1975. He served as chairman of the Building and Equipment Committee for Shriners Hospitals and then as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years.
He was a member of the Country Club Christian Church since 1962. He was director of Starlight Theater and Board of Trustees for Baker University and President of the Honorary Board of Trustees at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Board of Trustees at Research Hospital, Navy League of the United States and Director of the Kansas City Council, the American Royal Association and the Saddle and Sirloin Club. He was an avid horseman, cattleman and farmer.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Louise; son, John; daughters, Jayne and Marti grandchildren and great grandchildren.
