Ill Charles Kornbrodt was born in Schmalkalden, Schmalkalden-Meiningen, Thüringen, Germany in 1860. His parents died when he was nine and he went to work with his elder brother in the family sheet metal shop, while completing his schooling. He emigrated to the United States when he was nineteen, making his way to Dexter, Michigan where he was employed on a farm, then to Detroit where he was employed in manufacturing. He then relocated to Kansas City, Missouri in 1885 where he became employed as a foreman for E. Stoeltzing Company of 1415 Grand Avenue for thirteen years. In 1889 when he went into business on his own account as Kornbrodt Kornice Company occupied a building at 6th and Broadway. In 1907 he was able to erect a larger building in what is now downtown Kansas City as his business continued to expand, including customers such as the Jones Dry Goods Store, the Montgomery Ward Store and the Kansas City Southern Railroad as he became a an indelible part of the successful Kansas City business scene.
