Brother Robert Freeman Stevenson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania July 25, 1843. Ten years later his family moved to a farm in the Elgin, Illinois area. When Brother Stevenson was fourteen his father died and he moved back to Philadelphia to be with a guardian. In 1861 he moved back to Illinois where he remained until 1866 when he moved to Henry County, Missouri and engaged in merchandising. He studied law and in 1869 he was admitted to practice. He was a deputy sheriff and collector in Henry County in 1871 and 1872. He was chief clerk for the Missouri Treasurer from 1873 to 1880 when he engaged in the banking business.
Brother Stevenson was initiated into Clintonville Lodge, Illinois in 1865. He was passed and raised in Calhoun Lodge #184, Calhoun, Missouri in 1867. He affiliated with Tebo Lodge #68, Clinton, Missouri in 1869. He dimitted to Jefferson Lodge #43, Jefferson City, Missouri in 1873 and served as Worshipful Master in 1878. In 1877 he received the Capitular Degrees in Jefferson City Royal Arch Chapter #34 in 1877 and served as Scribe and High Priest. Entering the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons he was selected to serve as Grand King in 1884. He served as Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons in 1886. He received the Orders of Christian Knighthood at Prince of Peace Commandery #29 in Jefferson City, Missouri. He organized Boanerges Commandery in Clinton, Missouri in 1881 and served as Commander. He dimitted when he moved to Kansas City and affiliated with Oriental Commandery #35 in 1884 and was elected Commander in 1885 and again in 1886. He received the Scottish Rite degrees becoming a 32° from Albert Pike in 1885 and was elected Wise Master of Aerieopagus Chapter at Kansas City in 1891.
He was elected Grand Lecturer in 1899 and again in 1900 and was later affiliated with Rural Lodge #316.
