Illustrious Brother Crabbs was born into a family of Quaker stock on a family farm near Dayton, Ohio and attended public schools in the city of Dayton as he grew up. He came to Kansas City in 1880 and began work at a position paying $10 a week. By 1887 he established the Union Bank Note Company. As president of the company he worked for 26 years building the company until it was at the head of the printing, lithography and engraving industry. He served a term as president of the manufacturers association declining a second term. He was president of the Opera Society, president of the Kansas City Orchestral Association and was instrumental in establishing a the popular Sunday afternoon concert at Convention Hall. He served as Director of the Commerce Trust Company. He served on the Mayors Citizen Bond Committee. He was honored by his fellow printers by serving several terms as president of the Typothetae.
At one point in his Masonic career in Kansas City he became known for having conferred more 32° degrees on candidates than anyone else in the district. He also received Masonry's highest honor when he was coroneted with the 33°.
