Sherman Minton was born on October 20, 1890, to John Evan and Emma Livers Minton in their Georgetown, Indiana, home. He was the third of the family's five children.

Sherman Minton was a 1915 graduate of the University of Indiana and of Yale in 1916. He began his law practice in New Albany, Indiana in 1916, and for four years in Miami, Florida, returning to New Albany in 1928. He was a U.S. Senator from Indiana from 1935 to 1941. At the end of his term he served a short while as administrative assistant to the President of the U.S in 1941. In May 1941, President Roosevelt announced Minton's nomination to the bench of the Chicago-based Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

At a September 15, 1949, news conference, President Truman announced Minton's nomination to the Supreme Court, succeeding the deceased Justice Wiley Rutledge. Minton served as a Justice until October 15, 1956, retiring after 7 years and 3 days of service.

He served as an infantry captain in the Army during World War I.
