Admitted to New York bar in 1926 and practiced law in New York City until 1927. Member of law faculty at Columbia, 1925-28 and at Yale, 1928-34. Later with Yale Institute of Human Relations and U.S. dept. of commerce. Nominated to supreme court by President Roosevelt March 20, 1939. Served as a private in WW1.
