Alexander M. Dockery (1845-1926) was a Governor of Missouri, U.S. Congressman and Assistant Postmaster General. He was born on February 11, 1845 in a log cabin south of Gallatin in Daviess County, Missouri. He received his M.D. degree from St. Louis Medical College in 1865, and an LL.D. from the University of Missouri in 1906. He practiced medicine in Chillicothe, Missouri from 1866 to 1874, then moved to Gallatin, Missouri where he organized the Farmers' Exchange Bank of which he was cashier until 1882. He served 16 years as U.S. congressman (1882-98) from the Missouri 3rd district (48th to 55th congresses) and was governor of Missouri from 1901-05. He was restricted by law on term limits from seeking a second term. He was 3rd assistant postmaster general of the U.S. from 1913-21.

Alexander Dockery retired to Gallatin again for the final years of his life was a widower. All of their children died very young. Dockery mad a very large donation of books and money to help create the Gallatin High School library. He also donated a 13-acre tract of land for use as a park. For many years "Dockery Day", his birthday, was celebrated in the community with all the schoolchildren receiving free admission to the town theater, courtesy of the Governor. Alexander Monroe Dockery died December 26, 1926. He is buried in the Edgewood Cemetery in Chillicothe, Missouri.

Right Worshipful Brother Dockery was raised in Jackson Lodge No. 82, in Linneus, Missouri on Aug. 20, 1866; exalted in Lone Star Chapter No. 30, R.A.M. of Chillicothe, Missouri January 9, 1868; received as member of Solomon Council No. 26 R. & S.M. January 25, 1909 and knighted in Kadosh Commandery No. 21, K.T. Cameron, Missouri May 6, 1879. He was grand master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri in 1887 and grand high priest of the Grand Chapter, R.A.M. of Missouri in 1883. He also served as grand master of Oddfellows in Missouri.
