Congressman Borland died of bronchial pneumonia February 20, 1919 while traveling in Germany. He traveled to France on January 1 on behalf of the Grand Lodge of Missouri. He fell ill on February 1 while at the headquarters of the Army occupation.

Brother Borland helped organize the Kansas City School of Law in 1895 and served as dean from 1895 through 1909. He was in his fifth term in Congress and was married to the daughter of W.H. Winants P.P of Washington DC, formerly of Kansas City.
