Brother William Dickinson was born in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up just east of Independence, Missouri where his parents owned a fishing resort. He attended public schools in Independence, Missouri and graduated from Northeast High School in 1922. After graduating from junior college he enrolled in the University of Kansas where he graduated with a bachelor degree in liberal arts in 1926 and from their law school just two years later. His law office is in the National Fidelity Life Building. Brother Dickinson was appointed by the Missouri Supreme Court to examine candidates for the bar. He was reputed to be a pioneer developer in Independence, Missouri. He was a member of the Kansas City Bar Association and a Sunday school teacher and a trustee for the Country Club Methodist Church.

Brother Dickinson was active in Masonry. He received the 33rd degree in 1947, was a past master of Country Club Masonic Lodge and a member of Ararat Shrine. he was a Director of the Masonic Home in St Louis from 1944 to 1950.
