Jesse Lee Porter, the son of a Methodist Episcopal minister and farmer, Reverend James Porter. Who moved here from Tennessee in 1829, settling on a farm in Jackson County of what is now within the city limits of Kansas City. Jesse Porter attended grade schools and Central High School in Kansas City. He went on to attend Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He returned to Kansas City and engaged in the real estate business with his brother, James B. Porter, and his brother-in-law, William Ewing Hall under the firm name, Hall & Porter Brothers from 1882 to 1900 and then as Porter, Hall and Porter until 1934 when he continued on in real estate independently.

Jesse is a life member of all of the Masonic bodies, including Albert Pike Lodge #219 serving as Worshipful Master from 1898, 1899 and 1910; the A.F & A.M. Consistory of Western Missouri where he served as Master of Kadosh 1901 and was coroneted a 33° in 1905; Kansas City Commandery #10 KT and the Ararat Shrine Temple where he served as potentate in 1904.
